Dating advice is everywhere.
There are rules for texting, rules for first dates, rules for showing interest, rules for not showing too much interest, and apparently an entire cottage industry dedicated to figuring out what someone’s “Hey” really means.
FreshMeet thinks dating is complicated enough already.
FreshMeet is a dating advice and relationships website for people trying to navigate modern dating without turning it into a full-time job.
We write about dating, relationships, communication, first dates, meeting people, online dating, attraction, compatibility and all the wonderfully confusing situations that tend to happen when two people start getting to know each other.
And we’re not particularly interested in making dating more complicated than it already is.
What Is FreshMeet?
FreshMeet is a modern dating advice site built around a fairly simple idea.
Good dating advice should help you understand dating, not make you feel like you need a rulebook to survive it.
Dating has changed. The way people meet has changed. Dating apps have changed the way conversations begin, relationships develop and people decide who they want to get to know.
But underneath all of that technology, we’re still dealing with the same wonderfully unpredictable thing.
Other people.
People who have feelings, preferences, insecurities, expectations, bad habits, great stories and absolutely no obligation to behave according to the dating formula you found on the internet five minutes ago.
That’s what makes dating interesting.
It’s also what makes it confusing.
Dating Advice Without the Dating Games
We’re not against dating advice.
Obviously.
We’re a dating advice site.
But there is a difference between useful advice and advice that makes you wonder whether you need to hire a strategist before sending a text.
Wait three days.
Don’t wait three days.
Don’t respond too quickly.
Don’t seem too interested.
Let them make the first move.
Maybe make the first move.
At some point, dating starts sounding less like a way to meet someone and more like an extremely confusing board game.
FreshMeet takes a different approach.
We care about communication. Boundaries. Confidence. Compatibility. Attraction. Emotional awareness. And knowing when somebody’s behavior is telling you something worth paying attention to.
We don’t think you need to pretend you don’t care when you actually do.
We don’t think every text message needs to be analyzed like evidence in a criminal investigation.
And we definitely don’t think another person is a puzzle you need to solve.
Dating Got Complicated. Meeting People Shouldn’t Feel Impossible.
Modern dating has given us more ways to meet people than ever.
That’s a wonderful thing.
It’s also created some very modern problems.
There are more profiles to look through, more conversations to start, more ways to communicate and more opportunities to wonder whether somebody is interested, confused, busy, bored or simply terrible at texting.
You can have a dozen conversations going and somehow still wonder why you’re not actually going on any dates.
You can meet someone who seems perfect on a screen and discover that the chemistry doesn’t exist in person.
You can have a perfectly good date and then spend the next six hours wondering whether their use of a period at the end of a text means something.
It probably doesn’t.
Dating has always involved uncertainty. Technology didn’t invent that part.
It just gave us more places to overthink it.
What You’ll Find on FreshMeet
FreshMeet covers the real questions that come up when you’re trying to meet people and navigate relationships in the modern world.
Dating Advice
Practical thoughts about dating, attraction, expectations, confidence and the situations that leave you wondering what you’re supposed to do next.
Meeting People
Ideas and advice for getting out of your comfort zone, starting conversations, making connections and becoming more comfortable around new people.
Conversation and Communication
Because knowing what to say is only part of the problem. We also look at listening, texting, flirting, awkward silences and the strange art of keeping a conversation alive.
First Dates
First-date ideas, expectations, conversation, chemistry and all the little moments that can make meeting someone new exciting, awkward or both.
Online Dating
Dating apps and websites have changed how people meet. We look at profiles, messaging, online dating etiquette, boundaries and the realities of trying to make an actual connection through a screen.
Relationships
Because eventually, if dating goes well, you have to figure out what happens after dating.
That can be even more interesting.
You Don’t Have to Be Perfect at Dating
One of the things we don’t love about modern dating advice is the idea that you can somehow become perfect at it.
Have the perfect profile.
Say the perfect thing.
Make the perfect first impression.
Never make a mistake.
Always know exactly what the other person is thinking.
Good luck with that.
You’re going to have awkward dates.
You’re going to say something that comes out differently than you intended.
You’re going to like someone who doesn’t like you back.
Someone you weren’t particularly interested in will probably like you very much.
You’ll occasionally have a date where you spend ten minutes wondering whether you should order dessert and another twenty wondering why you agreed to meet this person in the first place.
That’s dating.
A bad date doesn’t mean you’re bad at dating.
A rejection doesn’t mean something is wrong with you.
And someone not being interested in you doesn’t make you less interesting.
Sometimes two perfectly decent people simply aren’t a match.
That’s not failure.
That’s dating doing exactly what dating is supposed to do.
Some Things We’re Probably Not Going to Tell You
Wait exactly three days before texting.
Probably not.
Pretend you’re too busy to care.
No thanks.
Analyze one punctuation mark for forty-five minutes.
Please don’t.
Try to make someone jealous so they’ll realize how much they want you.
We’re going to pass on that one too.
Treat every interaction like a psychological chess match.
Absolutely not.
We’re not against being thoughtful about dating. Quite the opposite.
We’re just not convinced that making yourself artificially difficult to understand is the secret to finding a healthy relationship.
We aren’t here to teach you how to manipulate another person into liking you.
We’re here to help you understand people a little better, communicate a little more clearly and recognize what actually works for you.
What We Actually Believe About Dating
We believe you should be able to show interest without playing games.
We believe your standards matter, but so does keeping an open mind.
We believe chemistry matters, but chemistry isn’t the same thing as compatibility.
We believe boundaries are healthy and that respecting someone else’s boundaries is part of being a decent human being.
We believe a first date doesn’t need to determine the rest of your life.
We believe texting can be fun, but eventually you probably need to meet the actual human being behind the messages.
We believe you should ask yourself whether you like someone instead of spending the entire date wondering whether they like you.
And perhaps most importantly, we believe dating should be something you experience rather than something you constantly analyze.
Why We Write About Dating
There is no shortage of dating content online.
That’s probably an understatement.
There are endless articles telling you what to text, how to flirt, how to identify a red flag, how to get a second date and how to know whether someone is secretly obsessed with you because they watched your Instagram story.
Some of that advice is useful.
Some of it is questionable.
And some of it seems to exist primarily because someone needed another article to publish on Tuesday.
We want FreshMeet to be different.
That means we’re interested in making each article genuinely useful rather than simply finding another variation of a topic we’ve already covered.
We want different questions to get different answers.
We want our articles to have personality without becoming a comedy routine.
We want them to be easy to read without treating readers like they’re incapable of handling an actual idea.
And we want our advice to leave you thinking about your own dating life rather than simply handing you another list of rules to memorize.
Who Is FreshMeet For?
FreshMeet is for people who are dating.
But that’s a surprisingly broad group.
Maybe you’re newly single after a long relationship and have absolutely no idea what dating looks like anymore.
Maybe you’ve been using dating apps for months and have started wondering whether everyone has collectively forgotten how to have a conversation.
Maybe you’re trying to meet people in real life again.
Maybe you’re nervous about a first date.
Maybe you’re wondering whether you should send the text.
Maybe someone you’ve been talking to suddenly disappeared and you’re trying very hard not to check your phone every four minutes.
Maybe you’ve had enough bad dates to become suspicious of anyone who says they’re “easygoing.”
Or maybe you’re actually having fun dating and simply want to get better at it.
You’re welcome here too.
Dating Doesn’t Have to Be a Performance
There is a strange amount of pressure involved in dating.
Be interesting.
Be attractive.
Be confident.
Don’t be too confident.
Show interest.
Don’t show too much interest.
Have standards.
Don’t be too picky.
Be yourself.
But apparently a strategically edited version of yourself.
It’s exhausting.
We’d rather talk about something a little more useful.
How do you meet people?
How do you communicate what you want?
How do you recognize compatibility?
How do you protect your boundaries without shutting people out?
How do you know when to keep going and when to walk away?
And perhaps the biggest question of all.
How do you actually enjoy the process of getting to know someone?
We don’t have every answer.
Nobody does.
But we think those are much better questions to ask.
Dating Is Weird. That’s Part of the Fun.
Dating can be exciting.
It can be awkward.
It can be disappointing.
It can be funny in ways you definitely didn’t expect.
Occasionally, it can be all four before you’ve finished your coffee.
You don’t have to have dating completely figured out.
Neither does the person sitting across from you.
Maybe that’s actually a good thing.
Because somewhere underneath the rules, profiles, texts, expectations and endless advice, dating is still just two people deciding whether they’d like to know each other a little better.
And that’s where FreshMeet comes in.
Not to give you another rulebook.
Not to promise that we’ll turn you into a dating expert overnight.
Just to offer useful ideas, honest perspectives and a place to think about modern dating without taking every little thing quite so seriously.
You don’t have to become better at pretending you don’t care.
You probably just need to become better at noticing what happens when you do.
Welcome to FreshMeet.
